Save the Children Good as New Clothes Sale in April
Mon 8th Mar 2010, 10:09

In its 43rd year – from Thursday 29 April to Saturday 1 May – this event continues to exceed expectations and many people come away from the Festival Hall in Petersfield with complete wardrobes. Year on year this event organised by the Petersfield & District Branch of SCF creates phenomenal interest as regular donors begin to receive the request for clothes. Increasingly the emphasis is on high end/designer brand goods which make for an attractive resale at bargain prices. Last year’s bargain was a wedding dress for £20!
At a time when everyone is looking to save money and the climate change message on recycling starts to hit home, what better way than to contribute and fill the wardrobe at the same time with a clean conscience? With free entry over three days the Festival Hall will again reverberate with delight, as bargains for home and clothing, sports equipment, linens, glassware, china and household items are discovered. The work starts well before the opening of the event as the local volunteers sort, size, check and arrange the donations given by regulars both local and those who know a good cause. The teamwork is phenomenal and very effective.
2009 was a record year for the Petersfield branch. Their events are managed by a Committee who would put any financial department in a large company to shame. Commitment and passion is what gives their events the success they deserve. They hope to beat the amount of £30,000 raised through last year`s sale, the Gift Fair, Christmas Concert and other miscellaneous donations to ensure that as much money as possible is sent to those in need. This year`s money will no doubt be put towards helping the rehabilitation of young lives in the Haitian earthquake amongst others.
At the end of the sale, knowing that the items are of a superb standard, these are cleared by the SCF retail manager and distributed to the SCF shops in the south and west of England where they continue to raise money for the charity. All profits go to the Save the Children Fund, this year celebrating its 90th birthday. With Princess Anne as Patron there was a party at Buckingham Palace for this milestone in September 2009, and long-serving Committee members Prue Scurfield and her husband David were invited.
It is a great community event and benefits younger families who need to accommodate growing children. Imagine being able to get such treasures and labels as Cacharel, Ghost, Phase Eight, Hobbs, Monsoon - to name but a few over the years – at affordable prices for a fraction of the original cost. What a wardrobe that would be.
